Ball Mill Saturated Grinding Phenomenon

Sign Of Saturated Grinding Phenomenon

Saturated grinding phenomenon is a kind of abnormal phenomenon in the operating process of ball mill. It will reduce the grinding efficiency or even damage the ball mill. The sign of saturated grinding phenomenon: when the saturation degree is light, the sound of ball mill turn from clear to rumble and the discharge products reduce. Then the saturation degree is serious, there is no sound of ball mill, the current of main motor decrease about 30%, the discharged products reduce greatly. When the saturation degree is very serious, there will be raw materials return phenomenon in the feed opening and there are no output products in the discharge opening. When we open the observation door, we will found:

  • 1. There are thick cushion on the scale board and steel balls (some even reach to 50mm);
  • 2. The gaps in the grid sections are seriously blocked;
  • 3. About 90% of the useful space in the grinding chamber is occupied by grinding media and raw materials.

Reasons About Saturated Grinding Phenomenon

When the feeding raw materials and discharging products of ball mill lose balance, a lot of raw materials will pile up in the grinding chamber, which will lead to the saturated grinding phenomenon. Here are the reasons about saturated grinding phenomenon:

  • 1.Too many raw materials are fed into the ball mill and the grinding capacity of grinding media cannot match it.
  • 2.The size of raw materials fed into ball mill increase or the grindability of raw materials decreases. Also, operators do not reduce the feeding quantity.
  • 3.The moisture content of raw materials is too high and the ventilation of ball mill is not so well. These will lead to the produced powder adhere to the surface of the grinding media and scale board. And there will form cushion in the grinding cavity, which will reduce the grinding efficiency. At the same time, materials with high moisture content will also cause difficult to discharge the ground powder. This is the commonly seen reason for saturated grinding phenomenon.
  • 4.The gaps in grid section are blocked by iron scurf and other litter.
  • 5.In the closed grinding circuit, the classifying efficiency of classifier greatly reduces.
  • 6.The average diameter of steel balls in ball mill is too small.

Solutions About Saturated Grinding Phenomenon

Once found out saturated grinding phenomenon in ball mill, operators should deal with it timely. Generally, operators can reduce or stop feeding raw materials to ball mill and improve ventilation in ball mill, in order to make the ball mill works with less or on raw materials and produce more heat. For the cushion adhered to the scale board or steel balls, operators should heating them till they crack and fall.
